Sen. Kerry Pushes Repeal of Blood Donor Ban for Gay Men

Every summer, the American Red Cross bemoans a shortage of blood donors, due in part to regular donors being on vacation. But there remains a ban in place that stymies a group of potential donors who happen to be gay men. It’s a hold over from the early, fear-ridden days of the AIDS epidemic, when scrutiny targeted whole classes of people including homosexuals and Haitian immigrants, rather than specific high-risk behavior.
